Blended Whisky
The Most Popular Type of Whisky
Whisky is a neat drink, be it blended or a single malt whisky. Blended whisky is nothing but the product of a blend of just different types of whisky. It is generally made by mixing one or more single malt whiskies with either grain whiskies or neutral grain spirits. Some of the countries famous for blends are Scotland, Ireland and Canada.
Almost none of the blended whiskies list an age. If it does list it then it means that each individual malt and grain whisky is as old as the list suggests. The world’s most famous blended whiskies are “Johnnie Walker” and “Seagram’s Seven Crown”.
Blended whiskies are much cheaper than Single Malt Whiskies. In most cocktails made with whisky, blended whisky is used. This is done to save on cost as well as because it’s a waste to have a single malt whisky mixed with anything. Single malt whisky tastes best unadulterated.
All Scotch pursuits believe that Blended whiskey is inferior to Single Malt whisky. Of course there are some who prefer the smoothness of blended whisky as compared to single malt whisky. While there are still others who believe that blended whisky offers tough competition for single malt whisky. They prefer the taste and flavor of blended whisky.
Over 90% of the whisky produced in Scotland is blended. These blended whiskies usually contain 10% to 50% malt whisky blended with grain whisky. The English market considered single malt whiskies as harsh and very strong. Blended whiskies were made for those who could not take in single malt whiskies.
Whisky is a great alcoholic beverage, you should try it out, and that is if you haven’t tried it out already. Single Malt Whisky is often only an acquired taste, so for someone who wants to try out whisky, I suggest you grab yourself a small peg of Blended Whisky.
