Whisky from Lowland
Scotland is truly the spirit of whisky. The best whiskies in the world are produced in Scotland. All over the country there are plenty of distilleries. Geographically Scotland is divided into three major regions; they are the Highlands, the Central Plain and the Southern Uplands. The Central Plain and the Southern Uplands are mostly covered by Lowlands. The lowland region lies in the most southern parts of Scotland. It is the closest to England. Most of the distilleries belonging to this region are between Glasgow to Edinburgh. The lowland in the days of the old had a number of distilleries to boast of but today it can boast of just three distilleries. It is often overlooked for the very same reason.
Even thought there aren’t too many distilleries in the Lowland anymore, they produce some fine Scotch whisky. Malts made at the Lowlands usually have something of a dry finish but are great aperitifs. The dryness is due to the malt. The whiskies here do not add too much peat. The whisky produced here is slightly sweet and you can get a taste of the fruits. There are many famous Scotch whiskies that have its origin here in the lowlands. The whiskies produced here in the lowlands are very mellow as compared to other whiskies. Most of the whiskies here are used as blends. Everybody enjoys whiskies from this region, be it a new drinker or an experienced drinker.
The there distilleries that still exist in the Lowlands are Glenkinchie, Bladnoch and Auchentoshan.
Auchentoshan
This distillery was founded back in the 1800s. This is the only distillery that still used the third distillation method. It often uses apples in its production. It is a very light whisky and the older it gets, the better it tastes. The distillery uses water from the Cochna Loch.
Glenkichie
This distillery originated sometime in the 1825. The founders of this distillery were the brothers John and George Rate. The whiskies produced here are fresh and indeed light in character. The whiskies have a hint of peat added to them.
Bladnoch
This distillery began in the early 1817. Several misfortunes struck the distilleries in this region but only Bladnoch was strong enough to stay open till date. However this distillery did shut down and only recently opened thanks to Raymond Armstrong. He has resurrected this distillery and is coming out with new tastes. Rumor has it that he is coming out with a new peated spirit; this is going to be very unlike what whiskies we usually get from the Lowlands.
Glenkinchie, Littlemill, and Kinclaith are a few names of whiskies that come from this region.
