Whisky from Speyside
Speyside is one of the whisky producing regions in Scotland. Out of 89 of Scotland malt whisky distilleries, half of them are located in this very region. For many Speyside is the best whisky producing region. Speyside really blossomed towards the latter part of the 19th century. This was exactly when blended whiskey became a huge hit among the masses of the different countries. The smoothness of the malt produced here was ideal for the use of blends. In only the 1890s about twenty one distilleries arose. The whisky business started flourishing in this region.
Today this region is home to some of the most famous names among the finest whiskies in the world, to name a few, Glenfiddich, Glenfarclas, Glen Grant and many more. Hey even have Speyside whisky festivals. They are a lot of fun.
Distilleries
Glenfiddich
This happens to be the biggest selling single malt whisky in the world, so you can imagine the amount of production that takes place at this distillery. It blossoms with business all year long. This distiller is situated near a small river named glen. Fiddich basically means that a river runs in the valley of the deer; guess what the emblem the drink bears is? Yes, you guessed right, a stag.
This distillery was founded in 1886. Who would believe that this distillery first began as a family company? The company was mocked at and it was never believed that single malt whisky would ever make it big. The company continued with Great persistence and today it is the world’s favorite Scotch whisky.
Glen Grant
This distillery was founded way back in 1840 and even today some of the original buildings are still standing. This distillery was founded by two brothers, John and James Grant. In the first decade of this century, Glen Grant has been bottled and sold as a single malt whisky. It is one of the world’s biggest selling malts; however its major business is among the youngsters. It is very famous in Italy.
Glenfarclas
This distillery was founded in the year 1836. This distillery literally grew out of a farm. It took the neighbor to make it a distillery, since the neighbor bought over the place. The meaning of the name of the distillery is “Valley of the green grass”. It has been owned by a family since 1865. It is owned by two brothers John and George Grant. They are not related to any other whisky owning Grants.
